LASTING LEGACY
In its first year competing in the GLVC, the William Jewell women’s soccer program secured many “firsts” for the school to start its NCAA Division II era. After opening the season 9-1, the Jefferson Roblee-led Cardinals earned their first DII national ranking in any sport when they appeared at No. 20 in the NSCAA Top 25 Coaches Poll on Oct. 2, 2012. Jewell would soon move as high as No. 15 in the coaches poll, helped by regular-season upsets over ranked Quincy and Rockhurst. The team was the first in school history to play for a GLVC Championship and the first in any sport to earn a postseason bid to the NCAA Tournament. Individually, GLVC Offensive Player of the Year Sarah Franklin became the first Cardinal in any sport to win one of the league’s major postseason awards. Franklin also became the first Cardinal to earn All-America honors in the school’s DII history. She was also a third-team All-American as a freshman in 2010 when Jewell was a member of the NAIA.
