WEEK 28:  2015 Indianapolis Women’s Golf

SEASON SUMMARY

The 2014-15 Indianapolis women’s golf team led wire to wire to win the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship – the school's first-ever athletics team national title.  UIndy maintained the lead through all four rounds at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Michigan.  After earning a one-shot edge after 18 holes, the Greyhounds’ lead ballooned to 16 strokes after the second round before slimming a bit to 11 after the third. During the final round, runner-up Rollins College made a hard charge with a team score of 293 – the lowest of the event – but UIndy held off the Tars with a solid 299 to win by five strokes with a score of 1,212 (305-299-309-299).  Senior Chanice Young tied for fifth overall at 302 (76-74-75-77), followed by junior Brooke Beegle tied for seventh at 303 (77-73-76-77).  Freshmen Annika Haynes (73-84-80-71—308) and Paxton DeHaven (79-75-81-74—309) tied for 16th and 20th, respectively, while junior Molly Ward (82-77-78-89—326) tied for 55th.  UIndy advanced to the NCAA Championships following their fourth consecutive NCAA DII East Super Regional crown as Haynes and Beegle led the way with second- and fourth-place finishes, respectively. Prior to NCAA competition, the Hounds overcame a three-shot deficit in the third and final round to become the first team ever to capture four consecutive GLVC Championships.  After finding itself seven strokes behind the lead after 18 holes, UIndy ultimately ran away with a 14-shot win over runner-up Southern Indiana.  Haynes, Young, and Beegle all finished within two shots of each other, placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, to earn All-Conference accolades.  DeHaven later joined her teammates on the All-Conference team, while Beegle was named GLVC Player of the Year and GLVC Freshman of the Year honors were awarded to Haynes.  In addition to securing the most coveted hardware on the season, UIndy’s squad was also recognized for academic success as well.  The Hounds tied for second among all Division II schools with six Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars, including DeHaven, Haynes, Young, Karli LaGrotte, Regan Pittard, and Jaclyn Schindler.  Young was named GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s golf and was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District® At-Large Team.

LASTING LEGACY
Not only did the Greyhounds’ national championship go down as the first won in any sport at UIndy, but the fact that they did it as a team originating from the Midwest was a feat equally impressive.  Since Division II began holding its own national championship in 2000, UIndy is the only school to win the title that did not hail from the state of Florida. In 2015, the Greyhounds represented the only school in the top six not from Florida or Texas.  It was a victory that established the foundation of UIndy’s national prominence under the direction of head coach Brent Nicoson for the remainder of the decade.  The Greyhounds have gone on to finish second, third and first again over the last three years, while sweeping all NCAA East Super Region and GLVC Championships along the way.  In fact, the 2015 squad earned the program’s ninth league crown out of the 17 GLVC Championships contested since 1998.  Beegle became the fifth UIndy golfer to be named GLVC Player of the Year, including Amy Wenning (2001), Kristi Piepenbrink (2008-09), Lyndsay McBride (2010), and Jenny Konop (2013-14).  In addition, Haynes became the sixth Greyhound rookie to garner GLVC Freshman of the Year accolades, joining Courtney Tate (1999), Piepenbrink (2006), Sarah Prascsak (2007) and teammates Schindler (2012) and Ward (2013).
