SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – The University of Indianapolis and Maryville University junior Carmen Villaverde hold the team and individual leads, respectively, after the opening day of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Illinois.

The 14-team field opened the event under sunny skies and low 60-degree temperatures, however a steady wind of 15-20 miles per hour, with gusts nearing 25 miles per hour, presented quite the challenge to the 68-player field.

Seven-time defending GLVC champion Indianapolis opened with a score of 324 – 15 strokes better than Lewis University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, which sit tied for second place at 339.  Remarkably, just four strokes separate second place with ninth.  Three teams – Rockhurst University, University of Illinois Springfield and McKendree University – are tied for fourth at 340, followed by William Jewell College in seventh at 341, and Maryville and University of Southern Indiana tied for eighth at 343.  Drury University sits 10th at 348, while Missouri S&T (350), Truman State University (355), Bellarmine University (371) and Quincy University (374) round out the field.

Individually, just two players finished with rounds under 80, including Maryville’s Villaverde and UIndy junior Pilar Echeverria – the two-time defending GLVC Player of the Year.  Southern Indiana’s Abbey Leighty and William Jewell’s Jailyn Marshall each carded an opening-round 8-over 80 on the par-72, 6,113-yard layout.  Seven players follow at 81.

Saturday’s second round of stroke play begins at 8 a.m. CT on both No. 1 and 10 tees.

The GLVC Women’s Golf Championships will once again be streamed live and free on all GLVC Sports Network platforms, including GLVCSN.com, iOS/Android mobile apps, and Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV OTT apps.
