SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – The University of Indianapolis earned its eighth consecutive and 13
th overall Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship Sunday at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Illinois.
The Greyhounds (324-294-296—914) led wire-to-wire and finished with a GLVC-record 53-stroke victory over runner-up University of Missouri-St. Louis (339-309-319—967). The margin of victory shatters the previous league mark of 37 strokes set by UIndy last year.
The University of Illinois Springfield (340-312-321—973), McKendree University (340-328-310—978) and Lewis University (339-327-314—980) finished third through fifth, respectively, while University of Southern Indiana (343-331-331—1005), William Jewell College (341-331-340—1012), Rockhurst University (340-338-335—1013), Drury University (348-336-330—1014) and Missouri S&T (350-329-343—1022) rounded out the top 10. Truman State University (355-335-341—1031), Maryville University (343-347-345—1035), Quincy University (374-332-342—1048) and Bellarmine University (371-343-354—1068) closed out the 14-team field.
UIndy junior Pilar Echeverria – the 2017 and 2018 GLVC Player of the Year – earned her first GLVC Championship with a 54-hole total of 223 (76-74-73). She was the lone competitor in the 68-player field to record all three rounds in the 70s this weekend. Her win marks the fourth straight Conference crown captured by a Greyhound and the eighth overall.
Echeverria’s teammates, freshman Cailyn Henderson (82-73-75—230) and senior Katharina Keilich (81-74-76—231), finished second and third, respectively, marking the first time in league history a trio of teammates have secured the top three places at the GLVC Championships.
McKendree’s Nathasha Ainsley-Thomas (81-77-76—234) finished fourth overall, while UMSL’s Emma Thorngren (81-75-78—234) placed fifth overall to secure positions on the first half of the All-Conference squad as top-five finishers.
The remainder of the All-Conference team, along with GLVC Player-, Freshman- and Coach of the Year honors, will be determined by a vote by the league coaches next week.
