INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis has been picked to win the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Lacrosse Championship, the Conference office announced Friday.
The GLVC Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll was voted on by the seven Conference head coaches. Per league policy, coaches are not permitted to vote for their own school
Indianapolis received six first-place votes and 36 points, while Rockhurst University received the remaining top vote and tied Lindenwood University with 28 points for second place. Maryville University earned 20 points and was selected fourth, with Lewis University right behind in fifth and 18 points. Davenport University was voted sixth in the poll with 11 points, while Quincy University received six points and finished seventh.
UIndy enters the 2022 campaign as three-time defending GLVC Champions, winning the 2021 title over top-seeded Lindenwood. The Greyhounds return four first-team All-GLVC selections from a year ago, including reigning GLVC Specialty Player of the Year Kyle Basch, first-team attacker Drew Billig, first-team midfielder Brian Robb, and first-team defenseman Josh Jackson. UIndy begins the 2022 campaign ranked No. 9 in the country by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) after its 2021 season came to a close in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament with a loss to fifth-ranked Wingate in the final seconds.
Rockhurst went 8-5 overall and 8-4 in GLVC play last year and will begin 2022 ranked 20th in the USILA Preseason Poll. The Hawks return an important piece from their team a season ago in senior goalkeeper Hayden Harris, who paced the GLVC in save percentage (.630) during his junior year.
Lindenwood finished 10-2 (9-2 GLVC) last year, falling in the GLVC Championship game, but return a key contributor from its 2021 team in first-team All-GLVC defenseman Brian Kellberg. The Lions enter 2022 at No. 12 in the USILA poll.
UIndy’s Basch is not the only major award winner from 2021 returning this season. The 2021 GLVC Freshman of the Year, Connor Robinson from Maryville, is back in the net for the Saints this year, who are led by reigning GLVC Coach of the Year Scott Stark. The Saints also received votes just outside the top 20 in the USILA preseason. Defending GLVC Goalkeeper of the Year, Daniel Milano of Davenport returns for his junior season after helping lead the Panthers through their first season in the GLVC in 2021.
The 2022 season begins Saturday, Feb. 5 with four teams in non-conference action, which leads in the six-game single round-robin league schedule, beginning March 12. GLVC Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament will be held on the campus of the No. 1 seed from April 29 – May 1.
