Four Schools Collect GLVC Men’s Basketball Major Awards



INDIANAPOLIS- Southwest Baptist University senior guard Quinn Nelson was named the 2021-22 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday. Additionally, University of Missouri-St. Louis senior guard Steve Webb earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Year honors, Maryville University freshman forward Dylan Ingram collected GLVC Freshman of the Year and Southwest Baptist’s Clark Sheehy and Lewis University’s Scott Trost tied for GLVC Coach of the Year recognition, as voted by their peers.

A total of 21 players were named All-Conference honorees across two teams, 10 earned All-Defensive Team honors, and 15 student-athletes were recognized as their program’s James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honoree in the sport. Major award winners and All-GLVC teams are voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Nelson helped lead the Bearcats to a 21-5 record, going 15-4 in Conference play and earning the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament. The Ozark, Mo., native averaged 14.8 points on the year, shooting 51.7% from the field and ranking second in the league in three-point field goal percentage at a 44.3% clip. Additionally, Nelson was a unanimous All-GLVC First Team selection after being named All-GLVC second team a season ago. This is the first major award for the SBU program since joining the league in 2019-20.

Webb has now earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. The St. Louis, Mo., product recorded 37 steals this past year for the Tritons, starting all but two game. He added nine blocks and 117 rebounds, including 80 on the defensive glass. Additionally, Webb earned his fourth All-Defensive Team honor of his career.

Ingram finished his rookie campaign with Maryville averaging 7.9 points while grabbing 3.2 rebounds a night, picking up All-Freshman honors for his efforts this year as well. Additionally, the product of Chicago, Ill., started 17 of 27 games played, averaging 21.4 minutes, and is the first-ever Maryville newcomer to win a major award in the sport.

For just the third time in Conference history, two coaches were voted by their peers to share top honors. The first occurrence was after the 2002-03 season and the second time came in 2011-12. Sheehy guided his Bearcat squad to a 21-5 record during his eighth year in Bolivar, going 15-4 in league play to earn the West Division Championship and top seed in the GLVC postseason affair. SBU ranked second in the GLVC in points scored per game (79.0) and allowed fourth-fewest points (67.0) and had three All-GLVC honorees. The Flyers achieved a 15-10 record in 2021-22, going 12-5 in GLVC play on their way to earning the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Tournament and a pair of All-GLVC selections. Trost is in his 16th season at the helm in Romeoville and is the program’s all-time winningest coach.

Webb has earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Year for the third time in his career. The St. Louis, Mo., product recorded 38 steals this past year for the Tritons, starting all but two games this season. Additionally, Webb earned his fourth All-Defensive Team honor of his career.

Joining Nelson as first-team selections were SBU junior Mitch Ganote Lewis University graduate senior Connor Niego, UMSL junior Marty Jackson and senior Yaakema Rose, University of Southern Indiana junior Jacob Polakovich, and Truman State University redshirt-junior Cade McKnight and redshirt-sophomore Masen Miller, University of Indianapolis senior Cory Miller Jr., and McKendree University junior Bryson Bultman

William Jewell College earned the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award, while 15 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were also recognized. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
