Four Inductees Named to 2022 GLVC Hall of Fame

INDIANAPOLIS – A seven-time GLVC Softball Coach of the Year, a three-time baseball All-American, a NCAA Division II career record holder, and a four-time All-GLVC Softball selection have been elected for induction to the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Hall of Fame, it was announced by the Conference office Wednesday.

The GLVC’s Class of 2022 inductees include Lewis University softball head coach George DiMatteo and baseball standout Mike Stevenson, Northern Kentucky University volleyball player Kerry (Lewin) Schrand-Rawe, and Quincy University softball player Torie (Bunzell) Kueker.

The GLVC Hall of Fame Class of 2022 will be honored at the Enterprise/GLVC Spring Awards Reception at the Drury Plaza Hotel in St. Louis on Tuesday, May 24.

DiMatteo began his long-time tenure at Lewis in the 1984 season after the Flyers joined the GLVC in 1981. He accumulated 1,032 wins during his 31-year career, ranking 11th in Division II history. While at Lewis, DiMatteo’s teams advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional 13 times, finishing as National Runner-Up in the 2001 season with a program-record 55 wins that year. A seven-time GLVC Coach of the Year, DiMatteo won 11 conference championships over the course of his career, 10 of which came in the GLVC, and finished runner-up nine times. On top of all his success leading the Flyers’ program to being a consistent power in not only the Conference, but the region, he coached eight GLVC Players of the Year and five All-Americans. Moreover, DiMatteo won two regional coaching awards in 1994 and 2000 and had twelve teams ranked in the final NFCA polls, including the program’s highest-ever ranking at No. 2 in 2001.

Stevenson is regarded as one of the best players in the history of the Lewis baseball program. On the team from 1988-91, he was named All-GLVC and All-American three-straight times from 1989-91. Stevenson has his name plastered on the Flyers’ record books, owning three career records in hits (341), runs batted in (230), and doubles (80), as well as a single-season doubles record (30). He’s also second all-time in career batting average (.417) and runs scored (221). Helping lead the Flyers to three consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball World Series appearances from 1988-90, the lefty started all but six games during that stretch where Lewis notched three top-five finishes in the country. The 1991 GLVC Player of the Year, Stevenson was also named the North Central All-Region Player of the Year, as well as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year that season, which makes him the only player in program history to receive that honor. Following his career at Lewis, Stevenson was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 1991.

(Lewin) Schrand-Rawe made an immediate impact when she got to the campus of Northern Kentucky. An All-GLVC selection as a freshman where she led the league in service aces, it was only the beginning of an illustrious career that saw two more All-GLVC honors and several other accolades and records come her way. (Lewin) Schrand-Rawe went on to not miss a game during her four-year career, compiling an overall record of 106-32 for a winning percentage of .768, including a 43-4 (.915) GLVC clip. Her legendary jump serve helped her lead the nation in service aces in 1995 as a junior with 152 for an average of 1.35 aces per set, records that remain third- and second-best in Division II all-time, respectively. Her GLVC Player of the Year award after her junior season propelled her to a strong senior campaign where she repeated as GLVC Player of the Year before NKU went on to win the Conference Championship, which was part of a 27-game winning streak to end the season. In addition to her GLVC accolades, (Lewin) Schrand-Rawe also collected back-to-back All-Region honors in 1994 and 1995. Inducted into the NKU Hall of Fame in 2007, she ranks sixth in career kills (1,582), second in digs (1,729), and first in aces (533), which still stand as the most all-time in Division II. Her 1.10 career service aces per set is also still second all-time in D-II.

In (Bunzell) Kueker’s time at Quincy, she was named First Team All-GLVC four times, GLVC Freshman of the Year, GLVC Pitcher of the Year twice, Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year, and All-American twice by two different organizations. She also won the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in softball and GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award her senior year, as the league’s top female student-athlete. Once the holder of the career strikeouts record in Division II, (Bunzell) Kueker’s 1,539 punchouts are still the gold standard for the Hawks’ program to this day, including 524 during her senior season – also a school record. The Hawks made it to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments her last two years on campus, picking up wins both of those years as part of her 95 career wins for the most in program history. (Bunzell) Kueker owns two other school records in innings pitched (930.2) and shutouts (46) while also sitting fourth all-time in career earned run average (1.14). Part of her 46 shutouts were the 10 career no-hitters she posted, along with tossing three perfect games. Moreover, her senior campaign was capped with several single-season records for Quincy, including wins (30), innings pitched (307.1), shutouts (14), and strikeouts (524).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 classes were left vacant, while the 2022 GLVC Hall of Fame Class will be the 19th class to be inducted since the establishment of the honor in 2002. With the inclusion of the Class of 2022 in May, the GLVC Hall of Fame membership will expand to 84 former administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.
