Three Teams Win GLVC Men’s Lacrosse Major Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Thursday afternoon its 2022 All-Conference teams and major award winners, with 46 student-athletes garnering recognition, seven earning James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees, and Quincy University and Maryville University voted as the team sportsmanship winner.

Lindenwood University graduate student Patrick Kaschalf was named GLVC Player of the Year as his teammate Kyle Hebert earned GLVC Goalkeeper of the Year. University of Indianapolis senior Kyle Basch repeated as Specialist of the Year and Maryville University rookie Clayton Cerett won Freshman of the Year as the Saints have won the award three-straight seasons now. Lindenwood mentor Jim Lange was also dubbed the league’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Lions to a 10-3 record this past season.

Kaschalk led the league with 48 goals during his 2022 campaign, chipping in 13 assists as well to lead the Conference in points and points per game. He netted five goals in six games this past season, helping lead the Lions to an average of over 12 goals a game that ranked second in the GLVC. The Stony Brook transfer gives the Lions back-to-back seasons with a player winning Player of the Year honors while Kaschalk also earned All-GLVC First Team accolades.

Kyle Basch of UIndy successfully defended his Specialty Player of the Year while earning another All-GLVC First Team selection to his resume. Basch snagged 41 ground balls for the Greyhounds this year while causing a team-high 20 turnovers in the 14 games he played. Offensively, Basch contributed three goals while picking up four assists throughout the course of the year.

A three-time GLVC Defensive Player of the Week turned into GLVC Goalkeeper of the Year for Lindenwood’s Kyle Hebert. Posting a save percentage of .608 this year was the best among goalkeepers who started more than five starts, saving a total of 118 shots during the 2022 season. Hebert also was awarded All-GLVC First Team honors for the first time in his career since coming over to Lindenwood from Stony Brook.

Cerett becomes the third-straight Saint to win the Freshman of the Year award. The Waunakee, Wisc., product started five games as a rookie in 2022 netting 16 goals and assisting on a dozen others. Cerett recorded double-digit goals in six games, scoring a career-high three in the Saints’ win over Quincy on April 2nd.

Lange guided the Lions to a 10-3 record this year, only falling once in Conference play coming just last week in overtime. Lindenwood was ranked in the USILA Coaches Poll all season, being a mainstay in the Top 10 for most of the season. The Lions had the second-ranked offense in the league in terms of goals per game while also being a force on the defensive end, picking up just over 34 ground balls per game on average.

The league also recognized Maryville and Quincy as its GLVC Men’s Lacrosse James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipient, as well as seven GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award Individual nominees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners.
