Three Teams Win GLVC Men’s Golf Major Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Tuesday afternoon its 2022 All-Conference Men’s Golf team and major award winners, with 10 student-athletes garnering recognition, 13 earning James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honors, and University of Missouri-St. Louis voted as the team sportsmanship winner.

University of Indianapolis led the All-GLVC squad with three selections each, while Missouri-St. Louis, McKendree University and University of Southern Indiana each garnered two nods and Missouri S&T also snagged one player on the team.

Indianapolis’ Oliver Mast was voted Player of the Year for the third time in four seasons on Tuesday, adding to his 2019 and 2021 awards. It is the 16th time a UIndy player has won top honors in program history. The senior repeated his top recognition from the league’s coaches and is just the second player in Conference history to win three-straight Player of the Year awards joining Northern Kentucky’s David Shearer from 2005-07. Mast averaged 71.7 per round this past season, earning a win at the West Liberty Invitational last month and tying for first at the NCAA Regional this weekend. On top of winning his third Player of the Year, the Fortville, Ind., product was named All-GLVC for the third time in his career.

Fabian Wennerlof becomes McKendree’s first GLVC Freshman of the Year in 24 years. The rookie out of Onsala, Sweden, averaged 73.74 per round this season, carding a season-low 66 in the Kentucky Wesleyan Fall Invitational during his second of three individual wins in his inaugural season. In addition to his three wins, Wennerlof had three other top-five finishes this past season for the Bearcats as he also earned All-GLVC accolades.

After leading his team to the 2022 GLVC crown, Missouri-St. Louis mentor Troy Halterman was recognized by his peers as Coach of the Year on Tuesday, making it the fourth time he has won the honor. The top-seeded Tritons won their third Conference title, knocking off seconded-seeded UIndy in the championship match.

Per Conference policy, each of the top-five finishers at the GLVC Championship automatically earn an All-League nod, with the remaining five competitors and major award winners voted on by the 15 head coaches. UMSL’s Joel Sylven was the Individual Medalist last month with the top individual performance. Joining Sylven in the top-five was his teammate Reilly Ahearn, Mast, S&T’s Carl Miltun, and USI’s Jason Bannister. Making All-GLVC by way of coaches’ vote were UIndy’s Keegan Bronnenberg and CJ Jones, USI’s Zach Williams, and McKendree’s Will Postlethwaite and Fabian Wennerlof.

The league also recognized 13 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees and the team award winner, Missouri-St. Louis. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
