Three Schools Win GLVC Men’s Basketball Major Awards



INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis junior center Kendrick Tchoua, University of Missouri-St. Louis redshirt-junior guard Isaiah Fuller, Drury University freshman guard Logan Applegate, and Indianapolis head coach Paul Corsaro have earned major postseason honors for the 2022-23 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men's Basketball season, the league office announced on Wednesday.
 
Tchoua was named Player of the Year, Fuller earned Defensive Player of the Year, Applegate garnered Freshman of the Year, and Corsaro was dubbed Coach of the Year by his peers. In total, 21 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, 10 earned All-Defensive Team honors, five were named to the All-Freshman team, while 13 were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport.

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.
 
Player of the Year: Kendrick Tchoua, Junior, Center, Indianapolis
  • Wins third Player of the Year award for UIndy but first since 2005 after David Logan was selected. Tyrone Barksdale was the first honoree in 1997.
  • Led league in GLVC-only games for field-goal percentage (.731, 106-of-145) and offensive rebounds (60, 3.0/game), while second in total rebounds (164, 8.2/game).
  • Led league in overall field-goal percentage (.737, 146-of-198) and offensive rebounds (88, 3.14/game), while third in total rebounds (209, 8.0/game).
  • Tops NCAA Division II for field-goal percentage this season.
  • Averaged 15.1 points per game in league contests and 14.4 overall, starting all 28 games played.
  • Registered second-most doubles-doubles among league players with eight.
  • Scored 24 of 28 games in double figures, including a season-high 27 against Drury Feb. 16.
  • Became 45th player to score 1,000 career points on Feb. 9.
  • Named GLVC Player of the Week on Jan. 16 and Feb. 20.
  • Helped Greyhounds to outright GLVC Regular Season Championship and top seed in GLVC Tournament.
  • One of five selections to the All-GLVC First Team, earning his first career All-Conference honor.
 
Defensive Player of the Year: Isaiah Fuller, Junior, Guard, Missouri-St. Louis
  • Becomes UMSL's fourth-straight Defensive Player of the Year after Steve Webb won the last three honors.
  • Matched career-high steals with five on Dec. 1, and recorded career-high nine rebounds on Feb. 25.
  • Tallied 36 steals and 108 rebounds overall and 24 takeaways and 68 boards in GLVC games.
  • Started 27 of 28 games, averaging 32.2 minutes of action overall and 34.1 in league competition.
  • Averaged 32.2 minutes overall and 34.1 in Conference contests.
  • Recorded a .525 overall shooting percentage with 15.2 points per game and a .515 shooting clip and 16.0 points in GLVC-only games.
  • Named GLVC Player of the Week on Dec. 5.
  • Named to All-GLVC First Team and was one of two unanimous choices on the GLVC All-Defensive Team.
 
Freshman of the Year: Logan Applegate, Guard, Drury
  • Wins Drury's second Freshman of the Year award after Alex Hall was chosen in 2010.
  • Led GLVC freshmen in all games with 13.3 points per game and 34 steals, as well as in GLVC-only games with 14.6 points.
  • Ranks in the GLVC top 10 for free-throw percentage (.831) and three-point field goals made (67, 2.39/game) in all 28 games and is a top-10 player for free-throw percentage (.833) and three-point field goals made (46, 2.30/game) in 20 GLVC games.
  • Averaged 24.1 minutes overall and 27.5 minutes in Conference action, starting 12 games.
  • Shot .440 from the field, .390 from three, and .831 from the foul line during the season.
  • Only unanimous pick on the GLVC All-Freshman Team.
 
Coach of the Year: Paul Corsaro, Indianapolis
  • Voted by his peers as Coach of the Year, marking his first career accolade as the top league coach, while this is the fourth time the award has gone to a Greyhounds' mentor.
  • Led UIndy to a 25-3 overall record and 17-3 GLVC record in his third season, as well as outright GLVC Regular Season Championship and top seed in GLVC Tournament.
  • Ranked seventh in NABC Poll.
  • In addition to guiding Tchoua to his major award, he mentored sophomore guard Jesse Bingham to the All-GLVC First Team as a unanimous pick, as well as Bingham and Jakobie Robinson to the All-Defensive Team.

Joining Tchoua, Bingham, and Fuller on the First Team were three unanimous selections that included University of Illinois Springfield sophomore forward Jack Weber, McKendree University sophomore guard Bryson Bultman, and Southwest Baptist University graduate guard Quinn Nelson. SBU also landed senior guard Mitch Ganote on the top list, while Rockhurst University junior forward Rich Byhre, Truman State University redshirt-junior forward Elijah Hazekamp, and William Jewell College junior guard Jordan Jermain completed the 10-member team.
 
William Jewell earned the sport's GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award, while 13 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were also recognized. These individuals must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees from full-time GLVC member institutions are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
