UIndy Earns Fifth GLVC Men’s Swimming & Diving Crown

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Indianapolis was crowned with its fifth Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday night at the Deaconess Aquatics Center.

The Greyhounds scored a total of 1,512.5 points for the win, besting this year’s runner-up McKendree University (1,499.5) by just 13 points for the closest margin of victory in league history. Drury University missed second place by 9.5 points to finish third (1,490), while Lewis University (1,048) and Missouri S&T (1,000) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively. University of Missouri-St. Louis (643) and Rockhurst University (448) claimed sixth and seventh, respectively. Coming in at eighth and ninth were Quincy University (390) and William Jewell College (342), while Truman State University (276) and Maryville University (164) rounded out the 11-team field.

A total of eight men’s records were broken over the course of the five-day event, including one on the final day of competition from Drury freshman Ivan Adamchuk in the 200 Backstroke (1:43.09) to secure gold and a NCAA B-cut. UIndy junior Cedric Buessing repeated as the gold medalist in the 1650 Freestyle with an A-cut mark of 15:10.28, while senior teammate Joao Silva posted a B-cut time of 43.76 in his 100 Free-winning performance. The 200 Breaststroke gold went to Drury sophomore Joao Nogueira (1:57.11), while the McKendree relay team of Arthur Souza, Alireza Yavari, Mario Perez Torrado, and Tyson Upton (2:55.15) acquired gold and NCAA Provisional status.

At the conclusion of the meet, UIndy’s Buessing three-peated as the GLVC Swimmer of the Year, while teammate Julio Osuna was recognized as GLVC Diver of the Year after winning both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Additionally, Drury’s Adamchuk was named GLVC Freshman of the Year, and Flyers’ third-year coach Evan Sholudko was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year. Other than Diver of the Year, which is awarded to the diver who earns the most total team points, the postseason honors are voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches. Per GLVC Bylaws, coaches are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.

The coaches also selected UMSL as the recipient of the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award in the sport, while 11 student-athletes were named GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees. These individuals must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees from full-time GLVC member institutions are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
