Lewis, Maryville, Rockhurst Take Home GLVC Men’s Lacrosse Major Awards



INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University graduate student attacker Evan Clement, junior specialist Domenic Tarello, senior goalie Riah Rathe, and head coach Joe Peruzzi, as well as Rockhurst University senior short-stick midfielder Matt Campion and freshman attacker Jonah McConnell, and Maryville University freshman midfielder Ben Mickett have all earned major postseason honors for the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Lacrosse season, the league office announced on Thursday.
 
Clement was named Offensive Player of the Year, Campion earned Defensive Player of the Year, Domenic was selected as Specialist of the Year, Rathe garnered Goalkeeper of the Year, Mickett and McConnell were tabbed co-Freshman of the Year, while Peruzzi was voted Coach of the Year by his peers. In total, 44 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, while seven were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport and William Jewell College was the team sportsmanship award winner. 

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.

Offensive Player of the Year: Evan Clement, Graduate Student, Attacker, Lewis
  • Claims first Offensive Player of the Year laurel for Lewis and second major award for the program after Riah Rathe was Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023.
  • Led league in six GLVC games for points (28), points per game (4.67), goals (17), goals per game (2.83), assists (11), and assists per game (1.83).
  • Ranked second in the league for overall points (66) and points per game (4.71), while third in total goals (37), goals per game (2.47), assists (25), and assists per game (1.67).
  • Started all 15 games for Lewis.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 4, and Apr. 29.
  • Garnered USILA Team of the Week accolades on Mar. 4.
  • One of just two unanimous selections to All-GLVC First Team in his third-straight year as an All-Conference honoree with the last two on the Second Team.
 
Defensive Player of the Year: Matt Campion, Senior, Short-Stick Midfielder, Rockhurst
  • Claims first Defensive Player of the Year accolade for Rockhurst and third major award for the program after Zach Bodeau was Specialty Player of the Year in 2019 and Kevin Kelley was Tri-Coach of the Year in 2023.
  • Recorded 42 ground balls (3.0/game) in 14 games and 16 (2.66) in six GLVC-only contests with 18 caused turnovers (1.29) overall and six (1.0) in league matches.
  • Finished top-10 in the league for overall caused turnovers (18) and caused turnovers per game (1.27).
  • Added eight points on six goals and two assists on the season.
  • Played all 14 games for the Hawks.
  • Named to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Specialist of the Year: Domenic Tarello, Junior, Lewis
  • Claims first Specialist of the Year award for Lewis and third major award for the program after Evan Clement was this year’s Offensive Player of the Year and Riah Rathe was Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023.
  • Had league-high .636 face-off percentage ( 70-of-110) in GLVC matches and the best overall percentage at .654 (149-of-228).
  • Was top-5 in the loop for GLVC-only ground balls (36) and ground balls per game (6.0), as well as overall ground balls (74) and ground balls per game (4.93).
  • Player all 15 games for Lewis, starting 12.
  • Named to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Goalkeeper of the Year: Riah Rathe, Senior, Lewis
  • Unanimously garners second-straight Goalkeeper of the Year honor.
  • Led league in overall games with a .622 save percentage, was second in goals against average (8.68), third in saves (183), and fourth in save percentage (12.20).
  • Topped the league in GLVC-only matches for save percentage (.603) and was fourth in save percentage (13.17), saves (79), and golas against average (9.89).
  • Started all 15 games for Lewis.
  • Named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Apr. 15.
  • One of just two unanimous selections to the All-GLVC First Team for his second-straight honor.

Co-Freshman of the Year: Ben Mickett, Midfielder, Maryville
  • Takes home fourth Freshman of the Year award for Maryville.
  • Placed ninth overall in the Conference for goals per game (1.93), adding nine ground balls and eight assists.
  • Contributed 10 goals, five assists, and four ground balls in GLVC-only contests.
  • Appeared in all 12 games for the Saints.
  • Earns spot on All-GLVC Second Team.

Co-Freshman of the Year: Jonah McConnell, Attacker, Rockhurst
  • Claims first-ever Freshman of the Year honor for Rockhurst and fourth major award for the program.
  • Ranked sixth in league overall for points per game (3.07) and goals per game (2.21).
    • Added 12 assists, 20 grounds balls, and three caused turnovers.
  • Placed third in points per game (3.33) in GLVC-only games, along with finishing fifth in goals per game (2.50).
    • Contributed five assists and 10 grounds balls.
  • Appeared in all 14 games for the Hawks, starting 13.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Apr. 1.
  • Earns spot on All-GLVC Second Team.
 
Coach of the Year: Joe Peruzzi, Lewis
  • Secures first-ever Coach of the Year accolade for Lewis.
  • In his sixth season, led Lewis to an 11-4 overall record and 5-1 mark in GLVC action, earning a share of the Regular Season Championship and top seed and hosting duties in the GLVC Tournament.
  • Managed team to league-best numbers in all multiple offensive categories for the entire season, including goal margin per game (7.0), points per game (25.87), goals per game (15.53), assists per game (10.33), and shots on goal per game (30.73), while also topping the Conference in faceoff win percentage (.653).
  • Led team to best GLVC-only numbers in goal margin per game (6.0), points per game (26.00), goals per game (16.17), assists per game (9.83), shots on goal per game (31-33), turnovers per game (14.83), and face-off percentage (.603).
  • Ranked 18th in USILA Poll.
  • Guided Clement, Tarello, and Rathe to major awards, as well as 11 players to All-GLVC recognition, including four on the First Team with Clement and Rathe also being selected unanimously.
 
UIndy led all league programs with five first-team choices, while Lewis and Maryville closely followed with four selections. The last spot on the First Team was filled by a Rockhurst University representative.
 
The league also recognized William Jewell as its GLVC Men’s Lacrosse James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipient, as well as seven student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
