Bolivar, Mo. – SBU Athletic Director, Clark Sheehy, announces Brady Matthews as the new Bearcat Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach.
"We are so excited that Coach Matthews is coming to SBU and to lead our tennis programs. He has great experience and having been a college tennis coach for 7 years will help him have the pedigree to lead our tradition rich tennis program! It's a great day to be a Bearcat!" – Sheehy said.
Coach Matthews joins the Bearcats after leading the Newman University Jets, a fellow Division II member in the MIAA conference. This past season he coached the MIAA/GAC men's freshman of the year player at Newman. That impressive feat went along with a women's 1
st-Team All-MIAA and two more men All-Conference honors. In the Fall season, a women's doubles team reached the Central ITA regionals for the first time in school history.
Prior to Newman University, he spent time as the men's and women's assistant coach at Cowley College, one of the premiere Junior College teams in the Nation. There he helped both the men's and women's teams to historic runs as the women's program won their first-ever National Championship. In that same season the Tiger men's team had a national runner-up finish.
Matthews continues to bring experience from another Division II school in Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He helped rebuild the program from a 2-11 team, to a 14-9 (conference runner-up), then a 20-8 season (conference champion). Before that he earned experience at Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as the men's and women's assistant coach.
"I am very excited and honored to be a part of SBU. Also, to be able to lead a team program that has such a rich history. I want to thank Mr. Sheehy for giving me this opportunity and looking forward to joining the Bearcat Family" – Brady Matthews said.
