The 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship will be held for at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri, on April 23-25. This year's event marks the 39th annual GLVC Men's Golf Championship.
The GLVC Championship features a 54-hole stroke play event with the top-four teams following stroke play competing in medal/match play to determine the Conference champion. A total of 36 holes are played on Sunday, April 23, followed by 18 holes on Monday, April 24. The semifinals and finals of match play will take place on Tuesday, April 25.
The GLVC Sports Network will once again provide free live action of the event, consisting of morning tee-times and post-round coverage. A complete schedule will be announced during championship week.
Indianapolis has captured 15 GLVC Championships, followed by Lewis and Northern Kentucky with six each and Bellarmine with five. Missouri-St. Louis has earned both of its GLVC titles over the past two seasons. Southern Indiana, UW-Parkside, and former league-member Ashland have all claimed the GLVC Championship once.
The top-five finishers at the GLVC Men's Golf Championship are named All-GLVC, and the top finishing individual after 54-hole medal play earns medalist honors. The remaining golf awards, including All-Conference positions Nos. 6-10, as well as GLVC Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year, are named following the spring season.
Last season, top-seeded UMSL completed its back-to-back title run by defeating a team in No. 2 Indianapolis (4-1) that had conquered the same feat two years prior (2013 and 2014). UMSL advanced to its battle with UIndy after knocking off No. 4 Illinois Springfield in the semifinals.
UIndy sophomore Graham McAree shot a 5-under 211 (75-70-66) to earn the one-shot victory over Bellarmine University freshman James Inman (69-72-71—212), who finished the 54-hole stroke play competition at 4-under. McAree’s 66 set the GLVC Championship record for a final-round score, while his 6-under round was the second-lowest on record as Northern Kentucky’s David Shearer shot a second-round 65 en route to earning medalist honors in 2005.
UMSL's James Henderson (75-68-70) and Bellarmine’s DJ Vogt (72-71-70) tied for third overall at 3-under 213, while UMSL’s Julien de Poyen (69-73-73) and Lewis' Alex Thode (70-71-74) – the 2015 GLVC Champion – finished tied for fifth at 1-under 215.
Admission to the 2017 GLVC Men's Golf Championship is free to the public.
