GLVC Announces Release of #JustCheckIn PSAs

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Thursday the release of 15 school-specific public service announcements (PSA) and one GLVC PSA for its new Just Check In campaign aimed at mental health awareness. The initiative focuses on the importance and impact of checking in with loved ones in your life through a powerful 30-second video. Sixteen static graphics were also created and disseminated to member schools for use on social media.

Each video aims to mimic a text message conversation with various individuals, including a coach, mom, roommate, dad, and best friend, beginning with the question, “Have you checked in on your fellow [insert mascot] today?” The videos then transition to pop-up notifications with messages of how someone might check in from the perspective of those people. A generic message then flashes on the screen stating, “When you’re ready to talk, I’m here to listen.” That precedes a response from the recipient that says, “Thanks for checking in. I needed that.”

In 2019-20, the GLVC released its Someone to Listen series that was the first edition of mental health awareness PSAs, and this Just Check In series aims to expand upon that effort with similar messaging.

“’Just checking in’ is really just another way of informing someone for whom you care that they are on your mind,” said GLVC Commissioner, Jim Naumovich. “The Just Check In PSA initiative is the league’s latest effort to address the bevy of challenges individuals at our schools face on a day-to-day basis and the critical role we all play to reach out and remind friends, teammates, classmates, and colleagues they are not alone. A random “just checking in” text, phone call, email, or personal encounter can be a powerful and emotional show of support to individuals who may be struggling to cope with a myriad of challenges.”

The videos and social slides were produced by Greers N Motion and will be shown on both GLVC Championship and regular-season coverage on the GLVC Sports Network (GLVCSN).
