Five Schools Collect GLVC Men’s Soccer Postseason Honors



INDIANAPOLIS – Missouri S&T senior forward Jason Jorgensen, University of Indianapolis sophomore defender Pierre Lurot and freshman forward Kabiru Gafar, Lewis University sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Doppelhofer, Truman State University’s Duke Cochran, and Maryville University’s David Korn have earned major postseason honors for the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Soccer season, the league office announced on Thursday.
 
Jorgensen was named Offensive Player of the Year, Lurot and Doppelhofer earned co-Defensive Players of the Year, Gafar garnered Freshman of the Year, and Korn and Cochran were dubbed co-Coaches of the Year by their peers. In total, 35 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, while 13 were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport and William Jewell College was selected as the team sportsmanship award winner.
 
Offensive Player of the Year: Jason Jorgensen, Senior, Forward, Missouri S&T
  • Becomes S&T’s first-ever Offensive Player of the Year in the sport and is just the fourth major award winner but first since 2010 when Pat McNamee was named Defensive Player of the Year and Joe Ahearn was named Coach of the Year.
  • Led league through 17 games in points (22) and goals (nine) while third in points per game (1.29) and goals per game (0.53).
  • Led league in 12 GLVC-only games with 20 points, eight goals, four assists, and 0.33 assists per game, while ranking second in points per game (1.67) and goals per game (0.67).
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3.
  • Earns second All-GLVC accolade but the first on the First Team.
 
Co-Defensive Player of the Year: Pierre Lurot, Sophomore, Defender, Indianapolis
  • Becomes UIndy’s third-straight Defensive Player of the Year after Makel Rasheed earned the award the past two seasons.
  • Started all 16 games on the backline, registering 1,410 minutes, helping UIndy hold opponents to 15 goals and 8.1 shots per game while recording five shutouts.
  • Played the full 90 minutes in all but five contests.
  • Helped Greyhounds earn No. 3 seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • Also one of two underclassmen named to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Co-Defensive Player of the Year: Sebastian Doppelhofer, Sophomore, Goalkeeper, Lewis
  • Becomes Lewis’ second Defensive Player of the Year, following his selection as the 2021 Freshman of the Year.
  • Played in 14 games overall, registering 1,220 minutes and 41 saves, and saw the field for 880 minutes through 10 GLVC games with 28 saves, a 5-3-2 record, and three shutouts.
  • Ranked third in the loop for goals against average (0.81) and save percentage (.788) overall, and is fifth in save percentage (.757) and sixth in goals against average (0.94) for GLVC games.
  • Named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept 5 and Sept. 26.
  • Helped Flyers earn No. 2 seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • Also named to All-GLVC Second Team after being on the Third Team last season.
 
Freshman of the Year: Kabiru Gafar, Forward, Indianapolis
  • Becomes UIndy’s second Freshman of the Year after Alejandro Steinwascher won in 2018.
  • Started 12 of 16 games, registering 879 minutes of action.
  • Recorded eight points on three goals and two assists, all in GLVC games, including one game-winning goal.
  • Took 20 shots with eight on goal overall with 14 and six, respectively, in GLVC games.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19, Oct. 17, and Oct. 24.
  • One of just two freshmen on the All-GLVC First Team.
 
Co-Coach of the Year: David Korn, Maryville
  • Voted by his peers as Maryville’s first Coach of the Year in the sport.
  • Led Maryville to a 9-4-3 overall record and 8-1-3 GLVC record, as well as the Regular Season Championship and top seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • Receiving votes in latest United Soccer Coaches Poll but ranked as high as No. 19.
  • Guided seven players to All-GLVC distinction, including three on the First and two each on the Second and Third Team.
 
 Co-Coach of the Year: Duke Cochran, Truman State
  • Voted by his peers as Truman’s first Coach of the Year in the sport.
  • Led Truman to a 5-5-6 overall record and 4-4-4 GLVC record.
  • Clinched the team’s first-ever berth in the GLVC Championship Tournament as the No. 7 seed since joining the league in 2013.

In addition to S&T’s Jorgensen and UIndy’s Lurot, 10 others earned All-GLVC First Team honors. The forwards included University of Illinois Springfield’s Billy Nzojyibwami and Lewis’ Cristian Perez; the midfielders were Illinois Springfield’s Max Tweddle, UIndy’s Michael Tselios, and Maryville’s Cedric Sengl; the defenders included UIS’s Drew Keller, UIndy’s Caleb Mundell, Maryville’s Andrew Schulz, and Rockhurst University's Gianmarco Donnini; and the first-team goalkeeper was Maryville’s Albert Escuin.
 
The 13 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees are listed below, which are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
