McKendree Holds Off UIndy for Fourth GLVC Wrestling Championship

 

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – For the fourth time in five years, McKendree University is the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) champion in the sport of wrestling. The top-seeded Bearcats (13-1) capped off their run to the title, defeating No. 2 University of Indianapolis (10-5) in Hyland Arena, 19-14.
 
McKendree’s Christian Mejia (125), Brody Norman (141), Jose Champagne (157), Cory Peterson (165), Dan Filipek (184), and Ian Kuehl (285) claimed dual wins against their UIndy counterparts in the final bout.
 
The Bearcats entered the weekend as the lone GLVC squad unblemished in Conference competition, sporting a 5-0 record in league duals this season.
 
In the final head-to-head matchups on the day, defending champion Lindenwood held off Maryville to claim third in the tournament (24-18), Drury defeated Ouachita Baptist (29-15) for fifth place, and Davenport edged out William Jewell (23-17) on their way to a seventh-place finish.
 
All-GLVC teams and major awards will be determined at a later date, pending a vote by the league’s head coaches. Additionally, GLVC teams will await information regarding qualifying for Super Regional 4 before the NCAA Division II National Championships in St. Louis, March 11-12.
