Maryville, UIndy Tie Atop 2022 GLVC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll



INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville University and the University of Indianapolis tied atop the preseason coaches’ poll as the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) men’s soccer favorites, the league office announced on Tuesday.

The preseason poll is selected by the league’s head coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own team.
 
No. 1 Maryville
  • Received seven first-place votes and 132 total points.
  • The Saints have won two titles since joining the league in 2008 with the last one coming in the 2020-21 spring season.
  • Head coach David Korn enters his seventh season at the helm of the program, after recording a 13-4-3 overall record in 2021 and 11-3 in the league.
  • Maryville returns First Team All-GLVC selection Mirza Hasecic, who netted seven goals last year while adding two assists for 16 points to finish eighth in the GLVC.
  • Nick Hemann is back in goal for the Saints after finishing second in the league in goals against average last year (0.84) and fifth in save percentage (.772).

 No. 1 Indianapolis
  • Received two first-place votes and 132 total points.
  • UIndy is coming off its second-straight NCAA Semifinals appearance after winning the 2021 GLVC title.
  • The Greyhounds will have a new coach for the first time in over a decade, as Gabe Hall replaces John Higgins and assumes his second head coaching tenure in the GLVC after leading Missouri S&T from 2013-18.
  • UIndy sported a potent offensive attack last year, scoring a whopping 54 goals, 48 of which were assisted, with both topping the GLVC.
  • After having seven All-GLVC selections last fall, only second-teamer Cole Rainwater and third-team honoree Patryk Olcyzk return in 2022.
 
No. 3 Illinois Springfield
  • Received three first-place votes and 127 total points.
  • Head coach Adam Hall enters his seventh year with UIS and is the winningest coach in program history since the school joined the NCAA in 2009, including last year’s 13-6-2 clip and 10-2-1 in Conference play.
  • The Prairie Stars are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021 where they came a game away from advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
  • Second-Team All-Region selection Conal Gallagher returns for UIS, finishing second on the team last season with five goals.
 
No. 4 Lewis
  • Received 107 total points.
  • Head coach Evan Fiffles returns to the sideline for his 31st season for the Flyers
  • Lewis has the second-most GLVC titles in league history, hoisting the trophy eight times.
  • The Flyers finished second in the league in goals (37) and assists (33) on their way to a 12-5-3 record a season ago, 9-3-2 in GLVC play.
  • The 2021 GLVC Freshman of the Year Sebastian Doppelhofer is back in goal after only sacrificing 17 goals in 20 games last year for a goals against average of 0.87, which was good for third-best in the league.
  • Lewis opens the season with three-straight games against in-region opponents when it faces Purdue Northwest, Parkside, and Northern Michigan from the GLIAC.
 
No. 5 Drury
  • Received the other first-place vote and 105 total points.
  • Head coach Ben Taylor enters his sixth season leading the Drury program and has taken the Panthers to the GLVC Tournament in two of the last three seasons.
  • First Team All-GLVC forward Jamie O’Brien is back after scoring nine goals in 13 games for a goals per game average of 0.69 to lead the league.
  • The Panthers open their season with four non-conference home games, beginning with Upper Iowa on August 26.
 
Rounding out the poll respectively in sixth through 13th was McKendree (91), Missouri-St. Louis (75), Quincy (65), Missouri S&T (56), Rockhurst (54), Truman State (30), Southwest Baptist (22), and William Jewell (18).
