GLVC Men’s Soccer Major Honors Awarded to Lewis, UIS, Rockhurst



INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University senior forward Joram Bogers and Rockhurst University freshman midfielder Sam McIntosh, as well as University of Illinois Springfield graduate defender Adrian Adames, graduate goalkeeper Andrea Scapolo, and head coach Adam Hall have earned major postseason honors for the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Soccer season, the league office announced on Thursday.
 
Bogers was named Offensive Player of the Year, Adames earned Defensive Player of the Year, Scapolo claimed Goalkeeper of the Year, McIntosh garnered Freshman of the Year, and Hall was dubbed Coach of the Year by his peers. In total, 33 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, while 14 were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport and William Jewell College was selected as the team sportsmanship award winner.

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.
 
Offensive Player of the Year: Joram Bogers, Senior, Forward, Lewis
  • Becomes Lewis’ first-ever Offensive Player of the Year.
    • 22nd overall major award winner with the most recent going to Sebastian Doppelhofer as the Co-Defensive Player of the Year last season.
  • Led league in goals (8), goals per game (.500), shots (53), shots per game (3.31), shots on goal (28), and shots on goal per game (1.75).
    • Finished runner-up in points per game (1.13) and tied for second in points (18).
  • Led league in GLVC-only games with eight goals, .615 goals per game, 18 points, 1.38 points per game, 50 shots, 3.85 shots per game, 27 shots on goal, and 2.08 shots on goal per game.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 16.
  • One of two players unanimously voted to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Defensive Player of the Year: Adrian Adames, Graduate, Defender, Illinois Springfield
  • Becomes UIS’ first-ever major award winner.
  • Started all 17 games on the backline, registering 1,450 minutes, helping UIS hold opponents to six goals while recording 13 shutouts – both are best in the league.
  • Added 12 points on six goals.
  • Helped UIS claim No. 1 seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • Also named to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Goalkeeper of the Year: Andrea Scapolo, Graduate, Illinois Springfield
  • Becomes first-ever GLVC Goalkeeper of the Year and second overall major award winner for UIS.
  • Started 15 games and played in all 1,336 minutes.
  • Led league in goals against average (.267) and save percentage (.862) while also tying for first in shutouts (11).
    • Stopped total of 26 shots.
  • Led league in GLVC-only matches with .077 goals against average, .955 save percentage, and 11 shutouts
    • Contributed 22 saves and allowed just one goal.
  • Helped UIS claim No. 1 seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • Joined Bogers as only players unanimously voted to All-GLVC First Team.

Freshman of the Year: Sam McIntosh, Midfielder, Rockhurst
  • Becomes Rockhurst’s third Freshman of the Year, as Lucas De Rossi was the latest in 2011.
    • 17th overall major award winner with the most recent being in 2017 when three Hawks won postseason honors.
  • Finished eighth in league with five assists and .333 assists per game.
    • Added two goals for total of nine points.
  • Tied for fourth in GLVC-only matches with four assists and .333 assists per game.
    • Recorded two goals for total of eight points.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 23.
 
Coach of the Year: Adam Hall, Illinois Springfield
  • Voted by his peers as UIS’ first Coach of the Year in the sport.
  • Led the Prairie Stars to 11-1-5 overall record and 10-0-3 GLVC record, as well as the top seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • In addition to guiding Adames and Scapolo to major honors, mentored total of eight players to All-GLVC recognition, including first-teamers Adames, Scapolo, Joe Conway, Max Tweddle, and Riccardo Sandulli.
 
In addition to the Prairie Stars’ quintet – Adames, Scapolo, Conway, Tweddle, and Sandulli – and Flyers’ Bogers, five others earned All-GLVC First Team honors. Upper Iowa University forward Mateo Rodriguez was joined by two pairs of teammates – University of Indianapolis’ Michael Tselios (midfielder) and Pierre Lurot (defender) and Maryville University’s Tim Smith (midfielder) and Alberto Di Pierri (defender) – to round out the First Team.
 
The 14 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees are listed below, which are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
