INDIANAPOLIS – Quincy University was voted in the preseason coaches’ poll as the choice to win the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) baseball championship, the league office announced on Monday.
The preseason poll is determined by the league’s head coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own team.
No. 1 Quincy
- Received nine first-place votes and 162 total points.
- Ranked 13th in National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Preseason Poll.
- Second-ranked team in Midwest Region Poll.
- Won 2023 Regular Season league title and fifth GLVC Championship in program history.
- Made eighth-straight and 12th overall NCAA Tournament appearance.
- Advanced to NCAA Midwest Super Regional as the top seed in the region.
- Tied D-II record for most home runs in a season (131).
- Coached by reigning GLVC Coach of the Year, Matt Schissel, who enters his third season and was named NCBWA D-II Coach of the Year after a 27-5 GLVC record and program-best 47 wins in 2023.
- Return First Team All-GLVC selections Dustin Dupont and Austin Simpson.
- Dupont earned a spot on the D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team, and Simpson was a Second Team honoree on the ABCA All-Midwest Region squads last year.
No. 2 Maryville
- Received three first-place votes and 151 total points.
- Ranked seventh in NCBWA Midwest Region Preseason Poll.
- Earned third seed at 2023 GLVC Championship, going 1-2.
- Advanced to NCAA Tournament for first time in program history, along with picking up its first-ever win over Ashland.
- Coached by Pat Evers, who enters his sixth year after a 21-11 GLVC record and program-best 36 overall wins in 2023.
- Return First Team All-GLVC selections Michael Gould and Elias Stevens, along with Second Team selection Drake Downing.
- Gould was named D2CCA Second Team and NCBWA Third Team All-America, while Stevens earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition from D2CCA last season.
- Gould was also named to NCBWA Preseason Midwest Region First Team.
No. 3 Indianapolis
- Received two first-place votes and 145 total points.
- Ranked sixth in NCBWA D-II Preseason Poll.
- Top-ranked team in Midwest Region Poll.
- Earned fifth seed at 2023 GLVC Championship, going 2-2.
- Secured 14th NCAA Tournament appearance last season.
- Made historic run, becoming the first-ever seventh-seeded team to reach the College World Series.
- Coached by Al Ready, who enters his sixth season after a 40-19 overall and 18-14 GLVC record in 2023.
- Return First Team All-GLVC selections Drew Donaldson and Caleb Vaughn.
- Donaldson was named First Team All-America by the ABCA, D2CCA, and NCBWA, as well as being honored as D-II’s Most Valuable Player by Perfect Game for the 2023 campaign.
- Vaughn was recognized as ABCA First Team and D2CCA Second Team All-Midwest Region last season.
- Both players were also named to NCBWA Preseason Midwest Region First Team.
No. 4 Drury
- Received 130 total points.
- Ranked 10th in NCBWA Midwest Region Preseason Poll.
- Earned sixth seed at 2023 GLVC Championship, advancing to the title game.
- Coached by Scott Nasby, who enters his 12th season after a 30-24 overall and 17-15 GLVC record in 2023.
- Return trio of All-GLVC pitchers, including First Team selection Cody Bahl and Second Team honorees Jack Jones and Wesley Laaker.
- Bahl was named to NCBWA Preseason Midwest Region First Team.
Rounding out the poll respectively in fifth through 14th was University of Illinois Springfield (118 points), Lewis University (114), William Jewell College (97), University of Missouri-St. Louis (84), Missouri S&T (83), McKendree University (56), Truman State University (47), Rockhurst University (39), Southwest Baptist University (26), and Upper Iowa University (22).
