Maryville Claims First-Ever GLVC Baseball Crown

 

MARION, Ill. – Second-seeded Maryville University won two games on Sunday to secure the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Baseball Championship, taking down No. 8 Lewis University, 11-9, in the morning and No. 4 Quincy University, 11-1, in the title game at Mtn. Dew Park.
 
The league crown is the first in the sport for the Saints after making its first-ever appearance in the Championship game. Maryville earns the automatic-qualifying bid to the 2024 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional tournament, which starts on May 16, and will learn its seed in tonight’s selection show at 10:30 p.m. ET.

  • The day started with the highest-scoring contest of the tournament, as the teams combined for 20 runs and 29 hits.
  • After Lewis extended its lead to 8-3 in the top half of the sixth inning, Maryville punched back with six runs in the bottom half.
  • MU’s Michael Gould provided a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a single to center field to extend the lead and eventually secure the win.
  • Andy Bunton tallied three RBI for the Saints, including a two-run homer.
  • Six Flyers contributed multiple hits, led by Michael Alt’s 4-for-5 performance.
  • MU’s Noah Harbin earned the win after tossing the final three innings and allowing one run.

  • MU dominated QU with three innings of three-plus runs.
  • QU’s Austin Simpson started the scoring with a solo shot in the second, but MU responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half.
  • The Saints recorded eight runs between the fifth and seventh frames to put the game well out of reach.
  • MU freshman Sam Cardwell threw the best outing of his young career, registering a one-run complete game with just four hits allowed and five strikeouts.
  • Camden Ruby was a main catalyst for the Saints’ offense, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI.
    • Matt Arnold added three RBI and Michael Gould homered, as well.
