INDIANAPOLIS – No. 10-ranked Indianapolis clinched the outright Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) football title on Saturday at Key Stadium, as the Greyhounds remained unblemished in Conference play at 8-0 with a 28-21 victory over Upper Iowa. UIndy has now won four consecutive league crowns and 11 total since the GLVC began sponsoring the sport in 2012.
The Hounds started the afternoon with a bang, notching two touchdown drives in the first quarter. Gavin Sukup for Callen Okerson from 12 yards to open the scoring, and then Sukup found Alonzo Derrick for 34 yards to cap off an 11 play, 99 yard drive.
Upper Iowa went on to tie the Greyhounds at the half, with two Darryl Overstreet Jr. passing touchdowns. The first finding Eddie Burgess from five yards and the second to Mante Morrow from 22 yards. The Morrow touchdown finished a drive that started at the Peacock 10-yard line.
Sukup and the Greyhounds responded when the quarterback ran the ball in from five yards out. Overstreet Jr. found Burgess for the second time on an eight yard score to tie the game at 21 each.
The Greyhounds would come away as victors as Sukup found Cole Bennett from four yards to give the Greyhounds a 28-21 lead with 3:47 remaining. Alvin Contreras intercepted Overstreet Jr. at the UIndy two-yard line to seal the game and the GLVC title for the Greyhounds.
UIndy earns the league’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II Football Championship, and they will learn their opponent on Sunday with the 32-team NCAA DII Championship bracket being announced on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
