INDIANAPOLIS – McKendree University redshirt-senior Logan Kvien was named the 2024-25 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Wrestler of the Year, the league office announced on Thursday. Additionally, Drury University grappler Bryson Humphries earned GLVC Freshman of the Year honors, and McKendree University mentor James Kisgen was voted GLVC Coach of the Year by his peers.
A total of 30 wrestlers were named All-Conference honorees across five teams and six student-athletes were recognized as their program's GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honoree in the sport. The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches.
Wrestler of the Year: Logan Kvien, Redshirt-Senior, 197 lb., McKendree
- Claims first Wrestler of the Year award and fourth overall for McKendree with Ian Kuehl (285) being the most recent honoree in 2022.
- Went 18-1 on the season overall.
- Ranked No. 2 at 197 lb. in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.
- Won two tournaments this season, including the Findlay Open, and Midwest Classic.
- Ranks fifth in NCAA Most Dominant rankings at 4.22 points per match.
- Selected to All-GLVC First Team, earning his third-straight All-Conference honor and first on the First Team.
Freshman of the Year: Bryson Humphries, 125 lb., Drury
- Becomes Drury's second Freshman of the Year after Brandon Borlinghaus won the award in 2022.
- Went 20-7 overall and 4-1 in GLVC duals.
- Only true freshman named to All-GLVC teams.
Coach of the Year: James Kisgen, McKendree
- Secures sixth Coach of the Year honor, the most by a coach since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2017.
- Led McKendree to 10-8 overall record and 3-2 GLVC record, as well as winning the program's sixth GLVC Championship.
- Ranked No. 7 in latest NWCA Poll.
- Kisgen mentored Jason Strope (125), Ronan Schuelke (141), Joey Semerad (149), Cale Hoskinson (157), Cory Peterson (165), Matt Ortiz (174), and Kvien (197) to All-GLVC First Team selections.
Joining Hoskinson, Kvien, Ortiz, Peterson, Schuelke, Semerad, and Strope on the First Team were Maryville University sophomore Evan Binder (133) and redshirt-senior Ryan Herman (285), as well as graduate student Colter Bye (184) from Upper Iowa University.
Drury University earned the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award, while six student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were also recognized. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
