UMSL, UIndy Take Home GLVC Women’s Golf Postseason Honors

INDIANAPOLIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis junior Wilma Zanderau has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women's Golf Player of the Year, while teammate Mayan Covarrubias earned the Freshman of the Year nod, and University of Indianapolis head coach Andy Serketich was chosen by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year, it was announced by the Conference office on Monday. In addition, five individuals completed the 10-member All-Conference team.
 
Per GLVC Bylaws, each of the top-five finishers at the GLVC Championship automatically earn an All-Conference selection, with the remaining five individuals and major award winners nominated and voted on by the head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own players.
 
Player of the Year: Wilma Zanderau, Junior, Missouri-St. Louis
  • Becomes UMSL’s fourth Player of the Year and first since Tove Brunell won in 2023.
  • Played in 38 rounds during the 2024-25 season with a 73.4 stroke average and season-low 68 at the National Preview.
  • Earned two tournament runner-up this season with eight top-10 finishes in 13 events.
  • Ranked No. 1 in the GLVC, sixth in NCAA East Region, and 48th in NCAA Division II.
  • Helped Tritons to two tournament wins, to go along with four runner-up finishes and five other top-10 results.
  • Finished second at GLVC Championship (77-74-72–223).
 
Freshman of the Year: Mayan Covarrubias, Missouri-St. Louis
  • Becomes UMSL’s sixth Freshman of the Year with her unanimous selection and first since Wilma Zanderau in 2023.
  • Played in 38 rounds during the 2024-54 season with a 75.7 stroke average and season-low 70.
  • Earned three top-five finishes, and three more top-10 efforts in 13 events.
  • Ranked sixth in the GLVC, 21st in NCAA East Region, and 152nd in NCAA Division II.
  • Helped Tritons to two tournament wins, to go along with four runner-up finishes and five other top-10 results.
  • Finished fifth at GLVC Championship (76-75-78–229).
 
Coach of the Year: Andy Serketich, Indianapolis
  • Wins first Coach of the Year award and 16th overall for UIndy.
  • Led Greyhounds to the No.2 seed in GLVC Championship medal/match play and league-best 17th Conference title with a 4-1 semifinal win over third-seeded Drury and 3-2 finals win over top-seeded Missouri-St. Louis.
  • Mentored UIndy to three tournament wins, including GLVC Championship title, to go along with one runner-up finish and four other top-five results.
  • Guided Caroline Whallon (71-76-73–220) to GLVC Individual Medalist honors at the GLVC Championship, Ava Ray to a top-five finish at the GLVC Championship and Macey Brown to All-GLVC recognition. Dy and Haines to major awards, and five players to All-GLVC recognition.
 
Along with Zanderau and Covarrubias, UMSL senior Juliette Lecomte, sophomore Hillary Currier, and freshman Emely Wahl, as well as UIndy junior Macey Brown and Drury senior Isabelle Thrall, were voted by the league coaches as the five additional honorees on the All-Conference team. Those earning an automatic spot on the postseason team included Whallon as the Individual Medalist, runner-up Zanderau, and fifth-place Covarrubias from UMSL, UIndy junior Ava Ray (77-72-75-224) who finished third, and University of Illinois Springfield junior Elaine Grant (72-74-81–227) who finished fourth.
 
The league also recognized 13 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees for the sport and UIndy as the team award winner. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced later this month.
