Maryville University junior goalie Gianna Guzek was chosen as the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Collegiate Association's Division II National Defensive Player of the Week. This is the second time a Maryville player has earned the IWLCA national honor this season, joining Helen Bae who was the national Offensive POTW Feb. 24.
Guzek spearheaded the defensive efforts in Maryville's 15-6 victory over No. 21 Grand Valley State. She made a season-high 12 saves, including stopping four free-position attempts. Guzek finished with a .667 save percentage to down another ranked team. She tied her season best with six ground balls and recorded two caused turnovers.
After defeating Ashland 20-7, the Saints take to the road for a pair of games in Florida. Maryville faces Tampa Friday, March 20.
