McKendree, Newman Undefeated After First Day of 2023 GLVC Women’s Bowling Tournament

LOCKPORT, Ill. – The first day of the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Bowling Championship Tournament has concluded with top-seeded McKendree University and third-seeded Newman University going unbeaten Friday afternoon at Strike N Spare II in Lockport, Ill., setting up their winners' bracket matchup tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. CT. Seventh-seeded Quincy was able to stave off elimination in its game against sixth-seeded Upper Iowa to advance to tomorrow’s morning action, as well.

The three-day event features double-elimination action, with each match beginning with a Traditional single-game total, followed by a five-game Baker format total, and then a best-of-seven Baker format, if necessary.

MORNING SESSION (8:30 AM CT)

No. 4 CENTRAL MISSOURI (899, 1035, 4.5) def. No. 5 LEWIS (1150, 974, 0.5), 2-1
Central Missouri and Lewis were one of two morning matches that required the best-of-seven Baker tiebreaker. Lewis got off to a hot start in the Traditional portion, winning 1150-899 thanks in part to Katharine Svehla’s 276 game. The Jennies bounced back in the Baker games, though, taking both the five-game section and best-of-seven to advance past the Flyers.

No. 2 MARYVILLE (991, 1004) def. No. 7 QUINCY (794, 859), 2-0
Maryville put on a dominant display against Quincy, totaling 1,995 pins compared to the Hawks’ 1,653 between Traditional and Baker. Saints junior Laura Bartelt led the way with a 238 Traditional game.

No. 3 NEWMAN (900, 883, 4) def. No. 6 UPPER IOWA (837, 945, 0), 2-1
Jets’ Carianne Takeuchi rolled a 214 game to help Newman to a 63-point win in Traditional play, but the Peacocks refused to go away, securing the five-game Baker portion to tie the match 1-1. Newman regained its composure in the tiebreaker, taking all four games to move on to the next round.

AFTERNOON SESSION (1:30 PM CT)

No. 1 MCKENDREE (1079, 1100) def. No. 4 CENTRAL MISSOURI (980, 957), 2-0
The Bearcats showed why they are the top-ranked team in the country, amassing 2,179 pins to win both the Traditional and Baker sections. UCM’s Andrea Perez Perez put up the top Traditional game (242), followed by the McKendree trio of Angelique Dalesandro (238), Maranda Pattison (233), and GLVC Player of the Year Hope Gramly (231).

No. 3 NEWMAN (1023, 953) def. No. 2 MARYVILLE (904, 871), 2-0
This high-seeded faceoff saw the Jets take a 2-0 victory over the Saints, as Newman performed well in both legs of the match. The Jets rolled a 247 Baker score and three 200-plus Traditional games, led by Allison Szewczyk’s 224.

No. 7 QUINCY (830, 890, 4) def. No. 6 UPPER IOWA (843, 812, 2), 2-1
Quincy and Upper Iowa traded blows in the longest match of the day, concluding with the Hawks winning the tiebreaker 4-2. Aubrey Kiddle of Upper Iowa led Traditional play with a 216 game, but Quincy came back to take both Baker portions and eliminate the Peacocks.

Day two of the postseason affair gets started once again at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with a pair of games between Lewis and Maryville on lanes five and six, as well as Central Missouri and Quincy on lanes 11 and 12. The winners of those matches will meet at 1:30 p.m., along with a fixture between McKendree and Newman.
