EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It was the fourth day of the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday, with the University of Indianapolis men and Drury University women maintaining their first-place positions on the team leaderboard. The event is being held at the Deaconess Aquatics Center in Evansville, Indiana.
The Greyhounds continued to display strong performances maintaining first at the end of day four (1,129 points). Indianapolis started the day with the 3-meter dive, where Julio Osuna secured gold (682.65). His performance broke the Conference record and earned him a NCAA A-cut. Junior Cedric Buessing continued to display dominance in any event he swam, obtaining gold in the 500 Freestyle (4:18.84) and breaking his Conference record from last year to achieve the A-cut standard. In the 100 Breaststroke, senior Brayden Cole swam for gold (52.94) to garner a B-cut.
McKendree (1,120) sits in second place despite multiple podium finishes in the 500 Free, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breast, 200 Butterfly, and 200 Free Relay. Junior Christian Davidson started day four for the Bearcats, earning bronze in the 500 Free (4:26.29), solidifying a B-cut. Sophomore Bearcat Patryk Rozenek earned gold in the 100 Back (46.74), securing a B-cut. Silver was earned by junior Filipe Pinheiro in the 100 Breast (53.40) to claim a B-cut. In the 200 Fly, sophomore Jack Lustig snagged gold (1:43.18), breaking his own Conference record and securing an A-cut. Rounding out the night was the McKendree 200 Free Relay, snagging first place (1:18.78) to reach the NCAA Provisional standard.
Drury University (1,103 points) is good for third, as senior Cole Earl (590.70 points) started the day off with a silver finish in the 3-meter dive, claiming a NCAA A-cut. Freshman Ivan Adamchuk followed with a silver medal in the 100 Back (46.95) to start out the swimming events, securing a B-cut. Sophomore Alejandro Villarejo (1:45.43) followed with a second-place finish in the 200 Fly to earn a D-II B-cut. The Panthers (1:19.03) finished the night with a silver medal in the 200 Free Relay. Lewis University (763) and Missouri S&T (748) rounded out the top five for the men, while the University of Missouri-St. Louis (486), Rockhurst University (376) and Quincy University (319) are sixth through eighth, respectively. William Jewell College (256) sits in ninth, with Truman State University (221) and Maryville University (126) rounding out the 11-team field.
On the women’s side, Drury remained in the top position with 1,379 points after another strong performance. Panthers' Josie Bushell started the night with a silver medal in the 500 Free (4:57.24), followed by teammate Lexie Waller taking gold in the 100 Back (54.82), claiming B-cuts in both events. Claire Conover (1:02.58) continued the trend in the 100 Breast, earning another first-place finish for the Panthers. Mellie Wijk (1:58.13) joined the 200 Free Relay team (1:30.79) in placing first and earning a new GLVC record, giving the Drury women four gold medals on the evening.
Second-place UIndy (1,287) got things going with junior Jamie Glover claiming the first gold of the evening session, winning the 500 Free with a B-cut (4:55.87), while Brynhildur Traustadottir (4:56.87) finished exactly a second later for silver. The next event, 100 Back, saw Isabella Revstedt (54.82) and Caroline Reinke (55.28) secure gold and bronze, respectively, and D-II B-cuts. In the 200 Fly, Andrea Gomez Espinosa (2:00.08) took the runner-up spot for UIndy, while its 200 Free Relay team closed out the night with another silver, claiming second place and a NCAA Provisional time (1:31.61).
In a distant third place with 832 points is McKendree, which earned a lone bronze medal courtesy of the 200 Free Relay team that finished with a NCAA Provisional time of 1:32.51.
All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
The final day of competition kicks off at 10 AM CT Saturday with prelims in the 100 Free, 200 Back, and 200 Breast. Women’s 1-meter diving will begin at 1 PM CT with all but the fastest heats of the 1650 Free beginning at approximately 2:45 PM CT. The finals will follow, including the fastest heat of the 1650 Free, starting at 5:30 PM.
